Postings:                                           AJ is 8 years old.  He has been treated for ectopia lentis in both eyes, with lens removal in both eyes.  He had the lens removed when he was 4 and 5.  He currently wears aphakic glasses.  We were told that is was best to wait until he was 14-16 to have intraocular lens (IOL).  I have read about very young children doing very well with IOL implants. I would like to hear others comments on this item.

Postings: My 8 year old son has X-linked Juvenile Retinoschisis. I received an eye report from a specialist that examined him recently, and I am trying to understand in a basic layman's term how poor his vision is. The report is confusing and I have called the clinic to talk with the doctor but she has not returned my calls...  His report states that his visual acuity is 10/70 and 10/50 in the right and left eyes with eccentric fixation at distance and 20/80 and 20/60 in the right and left eyes at near. Binocular vision at near is 20/50+2. At six inches he can see 20/30. Cycloplegic refraction was +6.00+1.25x175OD and +1.50+0.50x175OS.  I appreciate any help!

Postings:                                           I was diagnosed with central serous retinopathy almost three years ago. I have sporadic episodes of slight double vision, portions of soft focus in my field of vision, and line distortion. If you have had these symptoms, please contact me.  Maybe we can work together to figure out what may be the culprits in recurring episodes & also just to talk since many people do not understand the "fatigue" factor in every day life.  Thanks

P.S. I am a male, age 44. I started having symptoms at age 41. At first I thought I was having emotional problems since the first symptoms were vertigo-like episodes, and I had never had any vision problems whatsoever. Since I was diagnosed, I have not been able to find a lot of information on central serous retinopathy - causes / cures.

Postings:   My husband is in his late 30's and has worn glasses practically all his life. In the last 2 weeks he has been experiencing blurriness in his left eye. He thought it was because his prescription was changing but when he takes off his glasses he can see better out of that eye. He went to the optometrist, they could find nothing wrong with his eyes but the left eye had gotten 50% BETTER. They were dumbfounded. The first question  they asked was if my husband had diabetes, although they said that usually makes the eye worse not better. Has anyone ever heard of this. Any ideas? Please e-mail me...Thanks

To whom it may concern or any one can help

Wail and Wiam are brother and sister aged six and five years respectively. They are from Sudan. They are born with severe low vision, in both eyes, and latter discovered to be high myopes.

Wail (male) six years developed left retinal detachment that was surgical attended in Egypt 1995 with no improvement in vision. The same boy had scleral refractive surgery in right eye at Moscow 1997. Recent examination showed: Right eye: flat retina. Diffused myopic degeneration of the posterior segment.

Left eye: subtotal retinal detachment. Pale ischemic retina. Intraocular   pressure with soft eye

A and B scan (ultrasound): posterior staphloma with retinal detachment of the left eye. Right eye with axial length 27.81 mm.

Wiam (female) five years had no surgery done in both eyes. Recent examination showed: right and left eyes with bilateral highly myopic fundi with myopic degeneration affecting the posterior segment.

A and B scan (ultrasound): Right eye with axial length 26.47mm

Left eye with axial length   25.74mm plus retinal detachment.

Both children have low vision with glasses: male R 2/60      L 3/60

                                                                       Female R 1/60      L 1/60

With nystagmus in both of them

They are for:  1) Advanced investigation and medical technology.

Postings:                                            I was diagnosed as having histoplasmosis in
1997, after noticing distortions in my visual field. My local specialist,Dr.Carroll, said this is from a fungus. The symptoms strongly resemble macular degeneration,(wet type.) I have recently noticed new distortions and gray spots in my vision in the left eye. I have researched several medical indices which all suggest I may be experiencing blood leakage from new blood vessel growth behind the retina.
My options appear limited in terms of treatment, however, I see there is a laser surgery tx which seals the blood vessels. Has anyone undergone this procedure, and if so, how successful was it? Is anyone aware of new experimental treatment. I am open to any suggestions.

Postings:  About a year ago, a senior relative of mine experienced severe adverse reactions after taking Biaxin, an antibiotic produced by Abbott Laboratories,   prescribed to relieve symptoms of a slight cold.  Within a few days of taking the drug, she experienced hemorhorraging in her eyes causing partial loss of vision.   She describes her clouded sight as having "lost the light out of my eyes";  she also had meltdown and debris in her eyes, after the hemorhorraging cleared, as well as some loss of hearing, smell and taste.  A year later, her vision has been only partially restored with many relapses and occasional recurrences of   bleeding and she is currently contemplating surgery as the only hope of real improvement.

My question to the readers of this bulletin board is: Have you or has someone you know experienced similar reactions to Biaxin?  If so, my friend would like to get in touch with you, feeling that it might be mutually advantageous to share information about this problem.  Please write me, Laurence Beck, at [email protected].   Thank you.

Postings:   How do cataracts form?  I am 55 and was recently told my my Ophthalmologist that I all of a sudden am getting cataracts at a fast rate.  He tells me, if they do not slow down, I will be a candidate for eye surgery within two years.   Up to last year I showed no signs of cataracts.  Has anyone here had cataract surgery in their fifties, and what causes them besides aging?

Dear Sir/Madam

I am an eye specialist in Galati, Romania. As you might be aware, the economic situation in Romania is quite difficult. This situation has a serious impact on the health care. As a physician, I am trying not only to support my family, but also to help improve this situation by giving free consultations or accessible limits for persons with handicap or social problems, or old persons.

With great difficulty I acquired the office space required to open a private practice. However, I am unable to obtain the equipment necessary for the ophthalmologic care. I am writing to you with the hope that you might be interested in donating to my private practice some of your old or undesired equipment that you wish to replace. Included is a list of equipment that is needed.

If you do not whish to donate any of this equipment at this time, I would appreciate it very much if you could keep this letter in your records for future opportunities. I would also appreciate it if you could recommend me other physicians or organizations that might help.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Dr. Rodica Aurora MAZILESCU

Postings:   We have heard of a new method of treating cataracks using "eye drops" that were supposed to help remove cataracks, or slow the formation but can not find out anything about them.  If anyone knows about this treatment or where we could look to find information, we would appreciate your help.

Postings:  Recommendations, please, for manufacturers/outlets of titanium spectacle frames in the UK, particularly the West Wales, Midlands or London areas. I live in a very remote area with few retail outlets so have resigned myself to having to travel further afield in the search for decent frames.

Also appreciated would be any alternative advice on how to get around the combined problems of accommodating very thick lenses on a budget (I'm a postgraduate student). My choices seem to be severely limited as I cannot tolerate most metals (including goldplate and stainless steel), would rather not for the sake of aesthetics resort to plastic (which is generally hideous), and because of lens thickness and my face shape would prefer small round frames (which, due to the current vogue for elongated shapes, seem to have vanished from the face of the earth).

I have considered trying to find someone who will custom-build frames to my specifications, so, again, any suggestions for such service providers would be appreciated. Or for any charities or trusts who might be able to help me out with a grant or a loan; my myopia, astigmatism and retinal problems are of a degree that I have been quoted costs of £300 for lenses alone, and may have to abandon my studies if I cannot solve my optical problems.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Postings:    My 75 yr.old father has had a problem ever since he had cataract surgery. We have to dim the lights so his eye won't hurt.  However, this doesn't happen if he takes an antihistimine his eye doctor prescribed for him.  He was told his eye has an allergy!?!  Has this happened to anyone else?  Will it ever go away??  Thanks.

My friend has terriens degenerative disease.  apparently it is extremely rare (she is one of 5 known cases in australia) and usually affects older people (she is 29).  Does anyone out there know where i can get more info on this and especially anything on the web.  I have tried looking for it under pterriens, terriens, pteriens and teriens, but to no avail.(however, terriens comes up with all the people who believe they are aliens or are looking for proof of aliens so thats different) but if anyone could help me find out more, i would be very obliged.

Help. My brother-in-law suffers from 'toxiplasmosis' and/or 'cytomegalo virus'.   The former specialist for this disease has moved 5000 miles away.  He is seeing an opthalmologist(?), however it seems to be such a rare disease, that not much is kknown about it.  Does anyone have any information that can help us?  Can it spread from one eye to the other?  Is there a cure?  How did it occur? etc.   Any information would be very much appreciated.  Thank you, Nancy
